Protecting the Health of California Families | | - Developed the Contract to Fight Breast Cancer, a voluntary program under
which employers agree to provide their employees with adequate time off to receive an annual breast cancer screening. In the last two years, more than 200 companies have joined the program, assuring that millions of mothers, wives and daughters will have the opportunity to be screened for breast cancer. - Joined Senator Dianne Feinstein to increase outreach and enrollment in the
Healthy Families program, which provides low-cost health insurance for uninsured children. Also sponsored legislation (AB 59 - Cedillo) to expand access to the Healthy Families program. - Persuaded the UC Regents to divest from tobacco-related stocks, citing the
health hazards of smoking and the hypocrisy of investing education funds in corporations that target and harm California’s youth. - Hosted a Commission for One California hearing to discuss the
environmental disparities that impact minority communities across the state. The hearing included testimonials on conditions that affect farmworkers, problems that negatively impact the African-American Community, environmental challenges in large cities, and the best practices for community outreach. - Partnered with doctors and breastcancer survivors to call for Medi-Cal
coverage of the ImageChecker, an FDA-approved Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system that has been found to increase breast cancer detection rates by up to 23.4 %.
